The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at ORNL provides IT services that enable ORNL staff to be productively engaged in the business of world-class research and development. Such services include strategic platforms and operations, network and telecommunications, R&D systems engineering, customer service, applications development, cyber security, project management, planning and architecture

We are seeking a Team Lead for our Platform Services Group, who will lead a subsection of the group. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership abilities, excellent communication, and deep technical skills.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop roadmaps and engineer/deliver solutions to meet those needs as appropriate, both on-premise and in the cloud.
  • Lead in preparing cloud solutions for the business needs of ORNL.
  • Establish and maintain vendor partnerships to understand futures with an eye toward lowering operational risk and enhancing return on investment on purchases, whether on premise or in an external cloud.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve governance and procedures around offered platforms, including consolidation and retirement of redundant platforms.
  • Promote the use of common patterns and methodologies, with an emphasis on automation.
  • Create and maintain procedures, training, work instructions, and SBMS changes as needed.

This is a highly-collaborative position, with opportunities to partner with IT Group Leaders, CIO, and CISO to identify new or modified enterprise IT services that benefit the ORNL mission and maintain required cyber policy requirements. Additional opportunities include collaborating with customers across ORNL to define needs for platform services support; and coordinating with other IT groups outside of Platform Services.

The Team Lead will also manage a team of technical professionals. This includes selecting, coaching, and developing team members; planning, preparing, and devising work schedules; establishing and evaluating performance standards; and other personnel matters, raising to the Platform Services Group Leader as appropriate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a science- or computing-relevant field and 10 years of experience working in information technology.
  • Project management experience, particularly IT project management.
  • Experience with development and production tiers in platform delivery.
  • Experience with monitoring solutions and understanding of dashboards for quick and efficient operational awareness targeted from technician to management level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of technical engineering experience in an enterprise operations environment.
  • 3+ years leading enterprise IT operations and IT professionals.
  • 3+ years in IT Strategic Planning
  • Knowledge of support and life cycle enterprise platforms and services.
  • IT related certifications, such as ITIL.

Additionally, the following experience is preferred, but not required: experience and knowledge of DevOps and Software Quality Assurance; experience in platform engineering at the enterprise level; experience delivering and procuring cloud services; and experience with federal IT compliance requirements.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
