In the role of Senior Strategic Communications Strategist, you'll be responsible for managing projects and building strong relationships with some of HDR's most unique clients in the industries that HDR serves, including power, water, transportation, and architecture projects. As a natural connector of people, you'll understand these industries and interface with clients to learn about their priorities and challenges with the goal of engaging the right communication strategies. This requires deep knowledge of public involvement, public relations, and community engagement strategies along with the ability to listen, be creative, and find team synergies concentrated on solving the challenges facing our clients.

As Strategic Communications professionals, we work with our client's brand - not HDR - to strengthen their messaging and engagement strategies for a program, initiative, or project.

Primary Role & Responsibilities

HDR is looking to add a talented Senior Strategic Communications Strategist to our growing program in Colorado, specifically on the western slope/Grand Junction area. As a communications professional working within an engineering company, this role will also build and foster internal relationships with HDR project managers and staff.

In the role of Senior Communications Strategist we'll count on you to:

  • Develop a broad range of communication strategies, outreach programs, plans, message management processes, and initiatives and outreach activities that effectively educate, inform and build relationships with targeted stakeholder groups
  • Develop and execute communications strategies that support identified communication goals
  • Identify needs, objectives and design approaches
  • Develop schedules and budgets as required for each project
  • Develop and execute communication strategy planning and message management functions that drive communication service and product development /delivery activities
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with established internal and external sources of client media, locally, regionally and nationally
  • Manage public relations programs in the media and target markets, including working with public relations agencies and media to ensure media coverage
  • Drive and manage websites, including social media and mainstream outreach, and create and manage content
  • Provide communications support as needed for events and internal communications
  • Mentor and train junior strategists
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8 years related experience in strategic communications, public relations, public involvement, community engagement, or related
  • Experience leading the development of scopes, schedules and budgets, and managing projects
  • Service- and client-oriented personality with the ability to handle multiple assignments at a time and set and meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of local, state and federal requirements for public involvement
  • Self-starter; must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments
  • Can work well independently or in a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture
  • Understands the integration of the people, processes and technology needed to implement change
  • High aptitude for managing and solving tactical issues

  • Experience in the engineering and infrastructure industries
  • Previous consulting or account management experience
  • Experience planning and implementing multicultural communications/engagement
  • Multilingual

Physical Expectations/Requirements

  • Willingness to travel (up to 20%)
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds without assistance
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, by telephone and email
  • Must have a valid Driver's License

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of 7 years experience in a communications field of expertise: social media, event planning, community engagement, target marketing, descriptive writing, public involvement, etc

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independent with multiple teams as well as team oriented
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills - positive outlook and attitude

  • Comfortable and competent while working with senior leaders and managing cross-functional efforts
  • Demonstrated ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a high-energy, fast-paced environment

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite * InDesign
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
