Summary

Provides quality nursing care to the patient through the application of the nursing process, adaptive exercise therapy and disease management tools using evidence-based practice in accordance with department policies and procedures. Assignments include, but are not limited to, EKG/ECG monitoring, non-invasive BP monitoring, and clerical duties when appropriate. Utilizes effective and appropriate communication styles. Assists in maintaining a safe work environment and maintains clinical and professional competency as appropriate to the population of patients served. Focuses on excellent outcomes and patient experience.

Job Duties

  • Supervises cardiac rehab sessions, monitors EKG, updates exercise prescription and documents patient response to exercise.
  • Assesses learning needs, readiness to learn and actual or potential barriers to learning and integrates primary and secondary diagnosis into patient educational plan.
  • Documents assessment/reassessment in patient care plan, including interventions and outcomes, goal setting, behavior changes, etc.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with physicians and/or care team, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates commitment to quality and safety, in accordance with established policies and procedures, utilizing evidence-based practice. Participates in evidence-based practice and research/performance improvement projects as applicable.
  • Uses effective and appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication styles with patients, families, visitors, staff, and professional colleagues.
  • Functions as a team member to support department and hospital goals and objectives. Participates in all phases of the performance improvement process, including organizational and unit-based patient experience goals.
  • Performs validated technical skills based upon clinical specialty and unit practice.
  • Demonstrates leadership and team building skills including: - Teaching and mentoring new colleagues and department interns. Additional precepting, as assigned. - Delegating on the basis of skills and expertise of team member, acuity and specific needs of the patient, and time availability of team members. - Providing input as requested for performance appraisals of care delivery team members.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing
  • 1 year ICU and/or Coronary Care Unit experience
  • Strong knowledge of cardiac and pulmonary pathophysiology and the ability to assess patients' response to exercise.
  • Knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice.
  • Ability to work interdependently.
  • Attainment and maintenance of unit-specific competencies.
  • Ability to use pc software programs.
  • Ability to multitask and work well under stress.
  • Critical thinking and judgment skills with the ability to evaluate patient response to exercise during testing/intervention.
  • Demonstrates strong educational teaching abilities for patient education, both individual and group, as indicated.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of cardiac risk factors and lifestyle modifications.
  • Demonstrates strong clinical assessment skills and leadership in emergency situations.
  • Strong knowledge of interpreting arrhythmias.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire
  • CCRP-Cert Cardiac Rehab Professional AACPRPCC - State of Pennsylvania within 1 Year
  • RN - Licensed Registered Nurse_PA - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
