HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The ideal candidate for this position will be a skilled and versatile individual to work in the Instrument Shop of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The focus will be on machining and mechanical repairs, with capacity for electronics repairs seen as a plus. The Instrument Shop has many functions that center around the repair and development of scientific instrumentation and devices for the many research and instructional laboratories of the University. These include facilities for optics, condensed matter physics, high energy nuclear physics, biophysics, biology, chemistry, geology, neuroscience, and astrophysics, including the CHARA Array long baseline interferometer telescopes at the Mount Wilson Observatory. The shop maintains a full complement of machines for the development and construction of new instrumentation and tailor-made scientific equipment. The work challenges are varied and often involve direct interaction with university faculty, postdocs, and students.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Instrument Maker are the following:

  • Design and develop electronic systems for scientific research.
  • Machining of parts from mechanical drawings and CAD/CAM software using manual and CNC mills, lathes, welding, finishing, and assembly.
  • General machine and instrument maintenance.
  • Associated shop work (drilling, sawing, grinding, finishing, carpentry, etc.)
  • Repair and maintain electronic equipment used in scientific research.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Machinist Technical Diploma or an Instrument Maker Trade Certification, and two years of related experience or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Experience with electronics
  • Experience with milling machines and lathes
  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience in problem-solving
