Your Opportunity

Accountable for implementing production system requirements through a team of Production Managers and Production Specialists, emphasis in sow production, including Profit & Loss responsibility and continuous improvements in production efficiencies while maintaining focus on low cost production results.

Core Responsibilities
  • Manages and directs the service and operation of all SHP boar studs, which are responsible for delivering genetics into SHP sow farms and affiliated customers' herds - including leading meetings, communicating company direction, and reinforcing implementation of policies and procedures.

  • Performs service responsibilities for a number of farms where they are the direct communicator of procedures and specialist coaching/advise including performing the duties of a service representative.

  • Provides input as part of the SPG management team on objectives, priorities, and management plans.

  • Plays the lead role in determining overall operational direction within the boar stud system, i.e. resource allocation, staffing, and procedures.

  • Ensures boar stud operations are consistently providing the highest level of genetic improvement to all customers, through routine monitoring, reporting, and incentivization.

  • Ensures all standardized programs are rapidly and fully implemented at the farm level including Smithfield management programs as well as division specific programs involving genetics, biosecurity, and data collection.

  • Ensures biosecurity procedures are clear, communicated to team, and implemented to protect the health of the genetic farms, boar studs, and downstream production farms.

  • Ensures routine activity and performance reports for their direct service area are generated in a timely basis that document plans and results geared to and showing improving performance and genetic programs. Assists lead service and support people in generating similar activity reports for the other areas of the production chain.

  • Ensures farm and department managers can and are effectively leading, organizing, and managing their workforce for optimum performance.

  • Ensures staff training and development are in place and are effective and ensures staff issues are identified quickly, the appropriate people involved, and the issue dealt with effectively.

  • Helps identify ideas from field service people or farm staff for improving production processes that need to be examined for company-wide testing or implementation.

  • Ensures new innovations or standards are quickly and effectively implemented in the division and reporting mechanisms developed to monitor and give feedback to all affected parties.

  • Ensures safety program is implemented and procedures in farms are in place, constantly reinforced, and action taken to lower accidents, incidents, and injuries.

  • Ensures all company assets have preventative and routine maintenance occurring in a timely and effective way and that accountability exists to ensure this happens.

  • Ensures nutrient management programs on farms are implemented according to the guidelines and procedures established by the land and nutrient management group. Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield subscribes. Reports all environmental issues immediately to supervisor.

  • Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and complying with company EMS policies and procedures in the performance of their job duties.

  • Reads and understands the company's emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at work site.

  • Manages and directs the operation of the SPG boar semen freezing laboratory, which includes coordinating freezing schedules with other departments, performing the freezing process according to established protocols, managing the frozen semen inventory and nitrogen replenishment, and managing the equipment and supply inventory associated with the laboratory.

  • Manages the SPG semen quality control program, which includes coordinating operation and execution with the SHP Vet Laboratory, maintaining associated equipment, troubleshooting issues, gathering semen sample data and summarizing for reporting purposes, and coordinating third-party verification.

  • Manages and directs the SPG semen logistics department, which is responsible for all semen delivery in East SHP operations, including resource allocation for vehicle replacement and maintenance, as well as coordinating changes to semen delivery routes, protocols, and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Animal Science or a business related field and 10+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development is required.

  • Current and valid driver's license with acceptable MVR.

  • Proven emphasis and success in Sow production.

  • Demonstrated history of successful production and leadership.

  • PQA certification.

  • Must be available to work nights and weekend when necessary.

  • Must be available for occasional travel.

  • Must understand that Smithfield Hog Production is a producer of high-quality pork for human consumption and must be supportive of the mission of raising swine for meat.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers.

  • Ability to develop Standard Operating Procedures and training material.

  • Proven written and oral communication skills.

  • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Access, Internet and Pigknows knowledge are preferred.

  • Must be able to work under stress.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Salary Range

$114,500.00 - $171,500.00
