The Center for Regional Economic Advancement seeks an individual with accounting and financial support experience, including budget monitoring, to serve as its Programs Finance Specialist. This individual contributor role reports to the Director of Finance and has responsibility for an array of financial tasks related to specific projects of the Center.

This position is located near the Commons in downtown Ithaca, New York, in the Center's offices within, a business incubator and makerspace.

Part of Cornell Research & Innovation, CREA has an annual budget of $13M and executes over 30 programs focusing on clean energy, climate resiliency tech, food and agriculture, hardware, prototyping, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and business incubation.

What you will do:

Under the general direction of the Director of Finance, coordinate and complete financial function tasks for specific, identified, Projects of the Center as an individual contributor. Areas of responsibility include particularly the preparation and correction of forms, assurance of completeness, accurate data and calculations, account numbers and object codes, troubleshooting of transactions' completion of processing, and timely transmittal of transactions into Cornell's Kuali Financial System, ensuring transactions' compliance with Award and approval routing according to prescribed internal controls. Provide expertise in interpretation of university policies and procedures related to tasks. Collaborate with Finance and Programs to develop and implement strategies to achieve Program goals within a high-compliance environment and with clear communication of participant and partner expectations regarding transactions; assist CREA staff and program participants and partners in obtaining approved funding to reach program goals. Assist in monitoring budgets, execute transactions, and update financial projections. Perform financial reporting preparation to support Program needs. Research complex labor distribution discrepancies and coordinate and implement resolutions. Prepare periodic ad hoc accounting reports and reports to comply with external agency regulatory requirements, such as grants and contracts; provide post-award sponsored research setup of new accounts and cost share accounts, monitor cost-share, and perform account closure preparation. Provide expertise in interpretation of compliance and agency-specific policy guidelines; identify concerns and other non-compliance issues and address appropriately. Oversee purchasing process and actively participate in purchasing process of participants. Act in partnership with Business Service Center (BSC)/Financial Transaction Center (FTC) to foster business processes and resolve problems/issues. May verify and reconcile inventory and/or provide guidance on department policy and procedures.

What you will need:

Associate's degree and a minimum of 4-6 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Some experience with sponsored project management in higher education, particularly NYS and federal contract and grant requirements and their associated processing in a Cornell context, working with university divisions and departments. Accounting experience, particularly Cornell fund accounting, including KFS, ADW, RASS system for managing sponsored projects including those with Cost Share. Experience with contract review and operational implementation of requirements. Experience in a diverse working group with competing demands.


Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing. Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.

Significant financial support experience required, to include project and budget management. Position requires excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships at all levels and with internal and external constituencies.


Position works independently to resolve moderately complex issues related to program transactions including compliance monitoring. Requires strong organizational, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work with the highest level of confidentiality, tact, and discretion. Ability to establish and accomplish priorities, coordinate projects and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, with a high level of initiative. Strong computer skills, including electronic research, word processing, file management, and relevant application software. Extensive knowledge of spreadsheets, including formulas and pivot tables.


What other experience is preferred (but not required):

3+ years' experience working in a higher education environment.

Proposal writing experience

Cornell experience strongly preferred.
