  • Bachelor's degree in theater, costume design, or related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in any area of costume/clothing design and construction experience
  • Proficiency in costume construction techniques, including sewing, pattern-making, and fitting
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students
  • Knowledge of safety standards related to costume construction and use of materials
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software and costume management software (e.g., Costume Inventory Resources) is a plus
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
The Theatre Arts Program Costume Shop Manager oversees the daily operations of the costume shop, ensuring the timely and efficient completion of costumes for university productions and events. The Manager is responsible for managing inventory, supervising students, and collaborating with faculty and students to meet the creative and practical needs of theatrical productions and other projects.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the costume shop, including scheduling, budgeting, and inventory management.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to develop costume designs that meet the artistic vision of productions while staying within budget and timeline constraints.
  • Attendance at production personnel meetings
  • May supervise students, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance.
  • Oversee the construction, alteration, and maintenance of costumes, ensuring quality and accuracy.
  • Manage costume fittings and alterations for actors.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the costume shop and storage areas.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and university policies.
  • Keep abreast of current trends and techniques in costume design and construction.
  • Assist with other production-related tasks as needed.

Our faculty subscribe to the highest academic, artistic and ethical standards for themselves and their students. The Department of Visual and Performing Arts supports over 300 undergraduate majors along with providing general education courses for the university. The mission of the Theatre Arts Program is to provide students with exceptional professional programs, which combine development in artistic disciplines and career preparation in the arts. The Theatre program offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Theatre with concentrations in Acting and Theatre Technology, and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).
Work Hours Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm with the exception of Tech Weeks when the hours are shifted toward the tech week schedule to accommodate production schedule.
