Job Description

The incumbent will support the Director by providing scientific expertise and oversight specifically to the Diagnostic Laboratory, Diagnostic R&D and Genetic Quality Control programs including the specific areas of infectious disease diagnostic testing, environmental monitoring, genetic quality testing, and biosafety/biosecurity. They will also assist the Director in developing and managing capital and operation budgets; in the day-to-day personnel matters; and support customer facing consultations.

This role can be located in Bar Harbor, ME or Sacramento, CA

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Administrative- Assist the Director of Diagnostic and Pathology Services in developing and managing capital and operating budgets including 5-year budgets for strategic planning. Assist in the development and dissemination of policies and plans for health and environmental monitoring, sanitation, contamination risk assessment, biosafety, biosecurity, and other issues pertaining to animal health. This includes on-call duties to provide veterinary coverage in the event of an after-hours animal health problem. Assist in determining and implementing strategic directions for the Diagnostic Lab, Diagnostic R&D, GQC and Pathology.

  • Management: Assist the Director of Diagnostic and Pathology Services in managing the day-to-day personnel matters for the Managers of the Diagnostic Lab, Diagnostic R&D, GQC, Pathology and Biosecurity in terms of work assignments, goal setting, performance issues and interpersonal conflicts. Provide direction to CMQ veterinarians and managers in support of the Sr. Director.

  • Scientific: Assist the Director of Diagnostic and Pathology Services in providing scientific expertise in the form of experimental design, lab training, analysis of data, and development of new testing procedures for the research and development work performed by Diagnostic R&D group. Assist in developing and executing plans for new programs dealing with water systems, disinfectant choices and usage, decontamination of mouse rooms and laboratory equipment and similar programs.

  • Infectious Disease Consultations: Assist the Director of Diagnostic and Pathology Services in advising outside customers as well as departments and individuals within Jax about infectious disease testing, prevention of disease introduction into animal facilities, and procedures for maintaining healthy mice.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Veterinary Medicine -DVM. Must understand the basic principles of veterinary medicine as they apply to large numbers of mice, akin to herd medicine. Must make recommendations about managing mouse health based on this knowledge. Must have a firm understanding of epidemiological principles as they apply to health surveillance.

  • Desired : Board certification or board-eligible in the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists or related board certification (e.g. ACLAM or ACVM).

  • Experience- Must have minimum 3 years working experience with the detection of animal diseases and the use of diagnostic test methodologies for this purpose.

  • Administrative - must have experience in performing administrative duties for a large group of personnel working in a laboratory setting

Pay Range: $133,785 - $223,986 based on total years of related experience.
