Resident Supervisor - Summer Student Program, JAX-GM

The Summer Student Program is a signature education program of The Jackson Laboratory. The Resident Supervisor manages the residential life program within the JAX Summer Student Program (SSP) at JAX Genomic Medicine including mentoring, day-to-day logistics, and recreational activities. With oversight and guidance from the Program Director of Undergraduate and STEM Education, support from Residential Life staff at The University of St. Joseph, and in partnership with the Resident Assistant, the Resident Supervisor facilitates engaging and community-building programs and activities, fosters community harmony through communication and problem-solving, and ensures student safety through awareness and compliance with JAX policies.

The Resident Supervisors and Resident Assistant lead a cohort of approximately 10 undergraduate students ranging in age from 18-21. These participants are selected through a competitive application process that draws nearly 600 applications from around the US. Selected students exhibit personal qualities including curiosity and a passion for science, personal maturity, and teamwork. This student body is highly diverse, and includes individuals from many races, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, abilities, and beliefs.

This position includes semi-private dormitory suite-style housing at the SSP residence, The University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, CT. Please submit a letter of interest and resume to complete application.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the SSP residential program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: student residential orientation, setting the agenda and leading regular group meetings, oversight of communications systems and policies to ensure safety and information sharing, facilitating routine and emergency medical care, creating and participating in daily supervision and transportation schedules, and facilitating, in coordination with support staff, student compliance with residential policies, procedures, and traditions.

  • Develop and participate in a shared 'on-call' schedule, which will include evening and weekend hours.

  • Maintain, through informal communication, rapport, and personal presence, a high level of awareness and support for individual student needs and challenges. Provide problem solving assistance and guidance.

  • Oversee and manage recreational components of the residential life program. These include but are not limited to an overnight trip to an off-campus location.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must demonstrate ability and strong desire to work in a residential education and research environment, including outstanding mentor/student communication, leadership, and organization. Must be a self-motivated, team-oriented, patient and disciplined problem solver and solution builder.

  • Candidates must demonstrate ability and interest to work with students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates with experience or training in teaching or mentoring students from diverse backgrounds will be preferred.

  • Must hold a Bachelor's degree in an applicable field, preferably education, plus additional work experience.

  • Must have 4+ years successful work experience demonstrating leadership in a student-oriented field including teaching, mentoring, higher education, outdoor recreation, counseling, or a similar occupation.

  • Must hold a valid US drivers license and be able to transport groups of students in a van provided by JAX.

  • Must reside at the student residence (University of St. Joseph) for the full period of the Summer Student Program, from May 27 to August 11, 2024, including orientation and other activities that occur before and after the students depart.

Pay Range (hourly): $19.54 - $24.42
