    Research Intern
    Job ID2019-26980
CategoryResearch Associate, Research Assistant and Technician/Technologist

The Baker Lab at The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a Research Intern interested in joining a team of scientists studying how genetic variation impacts phenotypic variation through changes in the epigenome. Most genetic variants that influence complex traits (i.e. development or disease susceptibility) are located in regulatory regions. These regulatory regions are marked by a host of modifications, known as the epigenome, that change how the cell interprets the DNA code. Projects in the Baker Lab employ methods in functional genomics to understand epigenomic regulation during meiosis and germ cell development, and cell state transitions during early embryonic development using mouse embryonic stem cells as a model.

The Baker lab will train Interns to plan, execute and analyze a research project; however, motivation and curiosity are the two most critical skills that we expect you to bring to science.

This position is a full-time temporary position lasting a minimum of 12 months up to 36 months and is designed specifically for individuals with a four-year Life Science, Biology, Computational/Statistical/Mathematical Biology, or applicable degree, looking to advance their scientific/research training prior to pursuing further educational endeavors.

    • Organize and implement mouse genetics through animal husbandry
    • Maintain and differentiate mouse embryonic stem cells in cell culture; implement stringent aseptic techniques.
    • Successful execution of functional genomic experiments; and ability to recognize and implement quality control measures where needed.
    • Data analysis, project data management, and reporting.
    • Preparation of research reports, scientific papers, and generating preliminary data for research proposals in consultation with the Principal Investigator; develops and delivers presentations at lab meetings as well as to the larger Laboratory.
    • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biological sciences, computational sciences or related discipline.
    • Previous experience in an academic setting performing statistical analysis; interpreting and evaluating results, and compiling data preferred.
    • Explicit interest in pursuing and completing eligibility requirements for continuing studies in biomedical and/or clinical research; or in pursuing a medical profession.
    • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism.
    • Exceptional technical skills, facility with technical software and databases and ability develop technical documents and presentations.
    • Ability to interact in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.

A National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, JAX has a mammalian genetics headquarters in Bar Harbor, Maine, a facility in Sacramento, California, and a genomic medicine facility, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM), in Farmington, Connecticut.

The Jackson Laboratory's 43-acre scenic Bar Harbor campus is nestled between the Gulf of Maine and the mountains of Acadia National Park. Some of the best hiking and biking in the world (over 50 square miles of mountains, lakes, views, and dramatic coastline) is accessible from our campus. We are one mile from downtown Bar Harbor, which offers a vibrant downtown district with a plethora of restaurants, shops, museums, and galleries.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
