Job Description

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a Washington-based non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity.

JOB SUMMARY:


The Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS is recruiting a part-time, paid intern who can provide dedicated support for research related to China’s economic issues, during the period from September 9, 2019 to December 20, 2019. The Freeman Chair is dedicated to delivering informed public policy debate, expert briefings, and strategic policy recommendations on China and East Asia. Key research areas include U.S.-China relations, cross-Strait relations, Chinese domestic politics, and Chinese foreign policy. An ideal candidate will have substantive knowledge on contemporary China’s economy and policy process, particularly on issues related to technology, and familiarity with how to find and analyze primary Chinese documents and data. Because of the fast-paced work environment, interns should be motivated self-starters that are able to engage in a wide variety of analytic and logistical tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assisting in research, writing and analysis for articles, conference reports, and other such projects as dictated by program needs
• Assisting in spot and background research
• Curating the Freeman Chair social media platform
• Monitoring events in Chinese domestic and international policy, and reporting daily
• Providing logistical and administrative support for ongoing programs and projects
• Assisting in event planning and staffing
• Performing a variety of other Freeman Chair related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:


• Current undergraduate seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates. Applicants currently enrolled in or those that have recently completed a master’s degree are preferred
• Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution
• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Must be able to commit to 20 hours a week
• Must have strong research, analysis, and writing skills
• Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Must have the ability to work independently
• Must have the ability to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines
• Must demonstrate academic/professional background on China's economy and international economic relations
• Must be able to read Chinese-language documents and familiar with common sources of Chinese economic data
• Experience with quantitative analysis preferred
