At Abbott we have purposefully designed our internship to compliment your education in construction management. Our interns function as Project Engineers, however we work diligently to ensure that they are exposed to a wide range of experiences during their time with us.

While the specifics of each internship will be shaped by the project you are assigned to, our goal by the end of your internship is that you will have gained exposure to 4 main areas: Estimating/Pre-construction, Project Management, Business Practices, and Safety.


Each of those areas is broken down into key functions as follows:


Basic Estimating/Pre-Construction

Objectives: Understand the planning, and preparation that goes into a project before Construction begins.

  • Blue Print Reading
  • Quantity takeoffs
  • Permit Process (overview)
  • Bid Process (overview)

Project Management

Objectives: Understand the various facets of managing a project, including cost control, scheduling, planning and close out.

  • RFI Process
  • Scheduling (overview)
  • Field Reports
  • Submittals (Material Management)
  • Change Management
  • Construction Management Software
  • Quality Control
  • Meeting Minutes
  • Coordination with Jurisdictional Authority
  • Project Photography
  • Progress Documentation
  • Subcontractor Interface
  • Closeout Documents
  • Purchase Orders, Contracts and Subcontracts (overview)
  • BIM

Business Practices

Objectives: Get real world exposure to the basic business practices that drive a successful general contractor.

  • Time Management
  • Writing & Communication Skills
  • Laying the foundation for an exceptional customer experience

  • Issue Resolution & Problem Solving
  • Leadership Skills, Communication Skills

Safety

Objectives: Understand the planning, organization and implementation of the ABBOTT Safety Management Program. Identify hazards and communicate expectations to craft employees and project management.

  • New Hire Orientation
  • Standard Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Safety Walks

Qualifications

  • Must be able to pass a drug test
  • Must be in a construction related major, i.e. Construction Management, Construction Engineering Management, or similar.
  • Must have the permanent right to work in the United States.
